The Rural Obstetrics & Maternity Sustainability Program (ROAM) supports rural maternity teams in strengthening local maternity care, enhancing provider networks, and fostering sustainable solutions for maternity service delivery. Through funding, education, partnerships, and community-driven initiatives, ROAM empowers rural teams to develop innovative models of care that keep maternity services in their communities.

“ROAM activities and funding have supported the ongoing competency of maternity care providers and nurses. Without this level of continued support and training, our centre would have difficulty keeping our maternity program thriving.”

Making a Difference
“Every provider now feels they can do maternity care in a way that will have less burnout and more collaboration. We no longer feel we are practicing alone and can turn to a team when we are having challenges.”
“The team is feeling empowered to share what they’ve learned from each other and other sites. The improved confidence and competence has directly improved newborn patient care.”
Plans for the Future
In 2025, ROAM will expand to ensure all 32 participating teams have a dedicated Clinical Lead and a part-time Network Coordinator to support local maternity initiatives.
Additionally, ROAM and the Rural Surgical and Obstetrical Networks (RSON) program will gradually merge into a single, integrated initiative through the spring of 2025. This transition will strengthen provider networks, enhance collaboration at local and regional levels, and create more opportunities for knowledge exchange among maternity care providers.
