Format: lecture, workshop, and simulation components

Day 1: anesthesia and lung injury

Day 2: cardiac ICU

Day 3: brain injury plus team work and crisis management

Based on: needs assessment from UK and Australia for better performance in emergency situations; also based upon the training requirement of the RCPSC

Equipment used: a variety of interactive human patient simulators and mannequins

Anesthesia and lung injury, Cardiac ICU, Brain Injury plus Teamwork and Crisis Management

Learning objectives:

During the course, the candidate will review relevant pathophysiology and management of critically ill children with emphasis on:

  • Interdisciplinary team work and communication
  • Interdisciplinary crisis management
  • Communication in difficult situations
Procedural skills learned:

  • Ultrasound-guided line placement / Radiology — essentials for managing the critically ill child
  • Renal Replacement Therapy (CVVH/HD/HDF/ACD) / Cardiac Pacing
  • Transport / Communication skills
