The Rural Resident Enhanced Courses Program provides funding to eligible UBC Family Medicine residents, Specialty Residents, and Category 1 Enhanced Skills Trainees to participate in rurally relevant courses.
Benefits
- Reimbursement of course fees up to $1,200
- Reimbursement of up to $800 for travel and accommodation expenses if travel is required
Eligibility
UBC Family Medicine Residents
You may apply if you meet at least one of the following:
- You’re training in an RSA Community
Your home training site is located in an RSA Community. - You’re training at the Indigenous Site
You’re currently enrolled in the UBC Family Medicine Indigenous Site. - You’ve committed to rural practice
You have a formal commitment to work in an RSA Community after training, demonstrated by:-
- A signed job offer from a health authority or clinic in an RSA Community. Note: The job offer must be accepted before the course begins.
- (For IMGs) A high likelihood of fulfilling a Return of Service (ROS) agreement in an RSA Community.

- You’re exploring a rural-focused career
You demonstrate this by:-
- Fulfilling a requirement set by your training site to complete a 4-month RSA rural rotation, or
- Choosing a 4-month RSA rural rotation during your second year.

UBC Specialty Resident and Category 1 Enhanced Skills Trainees
You may apply if they meet all of the following:
- You’re in your final year of training
- You’ve committed to rural practice
You have a formal commitment to work in a Rural Subsidiary Agreement (RSA) Community, demonstrated by:-
- A signed job offer from a health authority or clinic in an RSA Community. Note: The job offer must be accepted before the course begins.

Application Process
For UBC Family Medicine residents
You may apply for funding for the following course opportunities:
- The CARE-R Course
Offered through the UBC Department of Family Practice and REAP during the R2 year.

- Application instructions are distributed when course offerings are confirmed (typically in early August.
- Selected residents are notified in early fall. Waitlisted applicants will be contacted if space becomes available and will be notified in early fall if selected for the course and placed on a waitlist if not.

- ATLS
Funding is available only if the course is not mandatory at your training site.

- You are responsible for registering for a BC-based course.
- You must first submit your claim to your site coordinator for processing in WorkDay under RAF-Central. Any remaining eligible costs can then be submitted through REAP’s Rural Enhanced Courses Program platform within 30 days of course completion or by March 31, whichever comes first.

For UBC Specialty Residents and Category 1 Enhanced Skills Trainees
You may apply for funding to support participation in a rurally relevant course if:
- The course occurs after your RSA practice commitment has been accepted.
- It is not mandatory or strongly recommended by your residency program.
- It focuses on clinical skills relevant to rural practice (not leadership or soft skills).
- It takes place within British Columbia. Note: If the course is not available in BC, please contact the REAP office for pre-approval.
- You apply through REAP’s Rural Enhanced Courses Program platform within 30 days of course completionor by March 31, whichever comes first.
