Ahousaht (also spelled Ahousat) means people of Ahous, a small bay on the west side of Vargas Island in Clayoquot Sound. Ahousaht can be translated to mean ‘people living with their backs to the land and mountains on a beach along the open sea.’ Members of this community are employed seasonally in silviculture, water taxi transport, construction, eco-tourism, forestry and aquaculture.
Located within the Clayoquot Sound Biosphere Reserve, Ahousat is home to an incredibly diverse ecosystem and a rare ancient temperate rain forest. The Wild Side Heritage Trail is the only living cultural trail in Canada and is used for spiritual practices as well as traditional food and medicinal plant gathering by the Ahousaht for hundreds of years.
