  • Castlegar is conveniently located for car travel at the intersection of Highway 3 and Highway 22. Highway 3, the TransProvincial Highway, facilitates access to Castlegar from the west coast and Vancouver (621 km / 386 mi), and from Calgary, Alberta (632 km / 393 km) and points east.

    Highway 22 leads south to Trail (31 km / 19 mi) and continues as Highway 22A to the US/Canada boundary at the Waneta crossing (48 km / 30 mi).

    The most direct route from Spokane, Washington (238 km/148 mi) is via the Nelway border crossing, then north on Highway 6, and then westbound on Highway 3 through Salmo.

    Airlines
    The West Kootenay Regional Airport is presently served by Air Canada, with daily flights to both Vancouver and Calgary. There are no charter companies operating regularly but there are two helicopter companies, Highland Helicopters and Dam Helicopters which provide passenger services.

  • People come to Castlegar for the area’s exciting outdoor recreation and parks. Cycling the fantastic Columbia and Western Railway corridor between Castlegar and Christina Lake is especially appealing, as well as golfing at the championship Castlegar Golf Club.

    In addition to cycling and golfing, explore the city’s large network of walking trails along the Columbia River, or check out rock-climbing at Kinnaird Bluffs, south of town.

    Learn more about local culture and history at the fascinating Doukhobor Discovery Centre, or take a peaceful stroll around Zuckerberg Island Heritage Park.

    Castlegar locals love their city and their sports, producing numerous special events and tournaments throughout the year. Visitors are invited to do the annual Art Walk or Sculpture Walk, shop at The Farmer’s Market or catch Castlegar’s Sunfest held during the first weekend in June. The Castlegar Bluegrass Jamboree picks its way through a mid-July weekend at the Pass Creek Exhibition Grounds. Mid-September brings the traditional Castlegar Fall Fair which includes a “Show and Shine” antique car show, a dog agility event, and a horse show. December brings Winterfest and it’s much beloved parade.
