Skills Gained

1. Acquire an adequate Parasternal Long Axis (PLAX) cardiac view and correctly identify key anatomical structures (LV, RV outflow tract, LA, aortic root, mitral valve).
2. Interpret gross left ventricular systolic function in the PLAX view and recognize sonographic features suggestive of both hypovolemia (e.g., small LV cavity, hyperdynamic function) and volume overload (e.g., dilated LV, reduced systolic function).
3. Measure and obtain the IVC in the subcostal view, including assessment of overall diameter and respiratory variation.
4. Integrate PLAX and IVC findings into clinical decision-making to differentiate hypovolemia from volume overload and guide fluid or diuretic management in common rural scenarios (e.g., sepsis, trauma, heart failure, undifferentiated shock).
