RCCbc, with funding provided by the Joint Standing Committee (JSC), supports the development of accredited rural medical courses. These courses frequently travel to smaller rural centres in British Columbia, and are delivered to interprofessional health care teams by rural physicians (or urban physicians who have previously practiced in rural communities).
Courses that have been developed with the support of RCCbc, REAP and/or the JSC include:
The CARE Course – Comprehensive Approaches to Rural Emergencies – 2 day course
HOUSE-OB – use of ultrasound to answer questions about pregnancy in the first trimester or third trimester – 1 day
HOUSE program – use of ultrasound at the point-of-care/bedside to assist with diagnosis, procedure, or treatment – variable length that can be customised
Specialist Online Journal Clubs – several journal clubs are offered for specialists and GP specialists over several months during the fall/winter. Topics for Journal Clubs vary by year – check the Educational Calendar or UBC Rural CPD web site for more information
Rural Airway Mannequin Loan Program – have a simulation mannequin sent to your community so that you can practice your airway skills. A set of scenarios is available with each mannequin.
Nanaimo Emergency Education Program (NEEP) – a full-time, remunerated fellowship in Emergency Medicine for family physicians in small or rural communities – three months in either Nanaimo or Prince George
Coaching and Mentoring Program (CAMP) – UBC Rural CPD’s Coaching and Mentoring Program (CAMP) fosters peer connections in rural practitioner networks to improve your practice, increase your confidence, and connect you to rural colleagues.
Peer support can take many forms, from an occasional phone call with a coach/mentor to a site visit to shadow a specialist as they perform procedures you don’t often see in your community. CAMP connects you with personalized, just-in-time support in whatever form works best for you. Coach/mentors provide support in a wide variety of areas including transitions in practice, emergency medicine, palliative care, Indigenous patient care, personal wellness and more.
The ESCAPE Course – a high fidelity simulation course for Family Practice Anesthetists to build team dynamics and optimize critical resource management in the rural perioperative setting – 1 day
