The 1860s were the start of a short-lived gold rush and the beginning of settlement in the Revelstoke area. The town itself was established in the 1880s as a transportation and supply centre for the mining industry. Nestled high in the Monashee Mountains, next to Mount Revelstoke and Glacier National Park, the community of Revelstoke boasts some of the most spectacular scenery in BC.
Historically a railroad town, Revelstoke prides itself on its rich heritage and scenic ambiance. Recreational activities here include backcountry hiking, ski touring, heli-skiing and river rafting.
The climate of Revelstoke is impacted by the deflection of warm moisture-laden air from the Pacific upwards by the Columbia Mountains. The cooling of this air mass brings significant precipitation, particularly during the winter months and the community is known for its snowy winters. The average summer temperature is 18 degrees Celsius, while the average winter temperature is -5 degrees.
