On the Community
“Very friendly people, mainly seniors. Patients were open to seeing residents.” “Community was fantastic. Trail and Rossland are very different culturally. Both very down to earth. The Trail community is more blue collar while Rossland has an adventurous spirit with a love for all things alpine and outdoor. I found both communities very welcoming. The staff at the Trail hospital are very friendly. The people of Rossland were very open to newcomers. I was invited to potlucks, bonfires and bike rides. Rossland is the safest place I’ve ever lived! Nobody locks their house and kids leave their bikes outside, unlocked!”
On the Experience
“Learned a lot, great collegial environment – well rounded experience.” “I found the experience quite rich. I got along very well with my preceptor – Dr. Stanley. He is very interested in health psychology, as am I, so we had many interesting discussions about why patients present the way they do. Trail is the Regional Center for the west Kootenays so almost everything is available at the hospital. There aren’t usually too many learners around so it is easy to get involved with emerg, ICU, anesthesia and maternity.”
Challenges
“Somewhat isolating. More gynecologists needed.” “The main challenge of this rotation was volume. Some clinic days were quite slow over the summer. I was not pushed to become more efficient. The inpatient volume was also quite low – I think because chronic medical conditions are so well controlled in this practice. The was no obstetrics in this practice.”
