  • Community Information

Ladysmith, a Vancouver Island heritage town, is located on the eastern shores of Vancouver Island. It is in between Nanimo and Victoria and has been home to the Chemainus First Nation for years. The town’s population has doubled over the last half century.

Coal mining was the primary economy in the early 1900’s and moved into logging in the late 1930’s. Logging is still a strong part of the local economy today. There is also a oyster fishery that is thriving as well as tourism in the area.

Residents enjoy hiking through their renowned trail systems and engaging in waterfront activities at Transfer Beach. Each year the popular Festival of Lights is held in November and December. They also host Ladysmith Days on the B.C. Day long weekend in the summer. Ladysmith has a free trolley bus that will take visitors from downtown to the waterfront to visit their unique floating Maritime Museum.
