Creating Learning Opportunities For Rural Healthcare Practitioners

The CARE Course

The CARE Course is a two-day, inter-professional, team-oriented learning experience developed by rural healthcare providers for rural physicians, nurses and pre-hospital providers. It enhances healthcare teams’ ability to deliver comprehensive rural emergency care across airway management, trauma care, cardiac care, emergency obstetrics, pediatrics and neonatal care. The CARE Course takes place in local healthcare facilities with local providers.

Achievements

CARE Course Delivered in 11 Communities Across BC

In 2024, the CARE Course team travelled to 11 communities, engaging rural healthcare providers from across the province. Each course brought together a team of experienced rural-based instructors to deliver high-quality emergency care education tailored to small community needs.

Faculty Development and Expansion

In 2024, the CARE Course expanded its team, bringing on new paramedics, nurses, and physicians. These faculty members underwent mentorship and co-teaching opportunities, strengthening the capacity of the course and reinforcing its sustainability.

Pilot Expansion – The CARE Course Goes Wild

A second pilot of the “CARE Course Goes Wild” was held in 2024. This variant takes participants into remote, outdoor settings—like canoe and camping trips—while maintaining the course’s emergency care content. The extended format combines clinical and wilderness medicine and will return in 2025.

Making a Difference

Participants consistently report feeling more confident, connected, and validated in their practice after taking part in The CARE Course. Feedback emphasised the value of “being taught by our own,” reinforcing that the course’s rural faculty deeply understand and share participants’ realities.

Plans for the Future

In 2025, The CARE Course celebrates 15 years. Plans include additional course offerings and expanded delivery of “The CARE Course Goes Wild” format. Continued focus will be placed on rural faculty development and enhancing community-specific, relational learning experiences.
