Get to know Dr. Jel Coward

Q: Where do you live?

A: North Vancouver, British Columbia (BC).

Q: What is your position at RCCbc?

A: I’m one of the two directors of The CARE Course. I’m also an RCCbc Core member.

Q: What does that mean?

A: I help design and run The CARE Course education program, a two-day interprofessional emergency care course for rural physicians, nurses and paramedics.

Q: Describe RCCbc in three words.

A: This needs longer than five minutes.

Q: What motivated you to join RCCbc?

A: I was invited to join many years ago. I see RCCbc as a vital and vibrant part of rural healthcare in BC.

Q: What do you like most about your job?

A: The collegiality. The feeling that RCCbc does good work and seeks out where good work needs doing.

Q: What has been one of your proudest moments working at RCCbc?

A: Just being part of the journey of this good work.

Q: What do you like to do on your days off?

A: On my days off, I enjoy gardening, building and fixing things, mountain biking, and playing music.

Q: Where is your favourite place in BC?

A: Pemberton, two-hour trek from North Vancouver.

Q: What one thing can you not live without?

A: Human connection and hope.

Q: What is the next item on your bucket list?

A: I don’t have a bucket list. My dream for my future is to be able to transition to having more time to be involved in community projects—in and out of medicine.

Q: Who would you choose to play yourself in a movie and why?

A: This may be a surprise to some, but I’m not a big movie fan. I have trouble remembering names of folks I know, let alone movie stars.
