The Rural Locums Initiative centralizes and shares information and resources among locums. It also enhances supports to ensure more physicians are comfortably incorporated into the locum pool. The availability of this pool supports recruitment, retention and resilience in rural British Columbia.
“Looking ahead, we want to provide more opportunities to learners to partner with rural locums for educational opportunities. Not only will these opportunities potentially build more interest in rural locum work, but it will also build capacity and a community of practice in rural settings.”
Launched a new study
During 2022-23, the initiative started a mid-sized rural communities locum study. The study will explore the access of family physicians in rural communities not covered by Locums for Rural BC to practice coverage, especially with respect to time away for parental leave. The pilot study in Comox and Campbell River is underway, with a province-wide study currently in ethics application.
