Galiano is named after Spanish naval captain Dionisio Aleala Galiano, dispatched from Mexico in 1792 to chart what is now the BC coastline aboard the vessel Sutil. Dionisio Point, Montague Harbour and Sturdies Bay were seasonal fishing villages for the Coast Salish First Nations. Arriving by canoe and settling in for the summer, the Salish hunted sea lions and fished for salmon.
Galiano is the least tamed of the major Gulf Islands because of its rocky geography and lack of arable land. Credit for this unspoiled charm is in large part due to the historical fact that fully half of the island was utilized as a tree farm by the lumber industry until the early 1990s. Most of Galiano’s population lives along the south end in its one village and at the end of the parks.
Galiano is in the Georgia Basin (which includes the Gulf Islands) lies in the rain shadow of Vancouver Island. This more protected region has considerably less precipitation and a greater quantity of sunshine. For example, the average maximum temperature is 6°C/43°F in January and 22°C/72°F in July. Autumn and winter still tend to have heavy precipitation.
