The majority of pre-hospital care in these areas is provided by basic life support paramedics who are unable to administer opioids or parenteral analgesics. Patients who need to be transported to a higher level of care have few alternatives for managing pain. The results of this study will help to determine if ambulance-based PCA is a viable option for providing pain control to patients during transfers to higher levels of care.
