REAP’s High School Strategy (HSS) provides rural high school students with the information, tools, and role models they require to navigate their way towards becoming rural physicians.

The HSS informs rural high school students of the opportunities that exist in rural health care, breaks down misconceptions and perceived barriers about applying to medical school, and encourages them to pursue medicine.

Studies have shown that rural healthcare students frequently return to rural communities to practice. Through HSS, we hope to plant a seed of inspiration in high school students to consider rural medicine.

Pathways to Medicine Presentation

Medical students, residents and doctors give fun, interactive presentations to rural high school students about rural student pathways to medical careers and the joys of rural medicine.

Be a presenter:

• Eligibility: This opportunity is geared towards students on rural rotations as a way to help them get to know their placement communities, but rural residents and doctors can also present. We have a limited travel budget available for interested students who want to present but are not placed in rural community.
• The HSS team handles all the logistics: we help you book an audience for your presentation, provide pre-made PowerPoint slides, and will administer feedback surveys.

• Going Rural – Opportunities in rural healthcare: Free virtual event held yearly that features panels of rural students sharing their pathways to health professions, and their experiences practicing rurally.
