While most of us have turned the calendar to August, in Duncan, BC, it’s still July, thanks to the vibrant 39 Days of July festival. This long-standing festival, which runs from June 28 to August 5, has been a beacon of live music and community spirit, spanning 39 days of continuous performances. This year, the festival is particularly significant for RCCbc due to a generous donation from Dr. Robin Routledge, a long-time Core member of RCCbc.
Robin has dedicated nearly 40 years to advancing rural medicine, particularly in the Cowichan Valley. This year he was awarded the RCCbc Award of Excellence in Rural Medicine–Lifetime Achievement for his work in developing therapeutic community clinics, offering health improvements through compassion, dignity, mutual education, and self-regard. As a testament to his commitment to community, Robin donated his award money to the 39 Days of July festival, further enriching the cultural fabric of Duncan.
Earlier this month, RCCbc Island Node staff and doctors had the pleasure of visiting Duncan, where we joined Robin and festival organizer Longevity John Falkner at the festival stage. In a short interview, Robin and John shared their thoughts on the festival’s impact on the community and the significance of Robin’s donation.
“The 39 Days of July is more than just a music festival; it’s a celebration of community and creativity,” said Robin. “I’m honoured to support this event that brings joy and unity to so many.”
Longevity John added, “Robin’s donation is a great pat on the back … it’s a tremendous boost for the festival, allowing us to continue offering a platform for local and visiting artists. It’s a testament to how much this festival means to everyone involved.”
As the festival wraps up on August 5, everyone is invited to join in the celebration and experience the magic that makes July last a little longer in Duncan.
