CULTIVATE RELATIONSHIPS AND NETWORKS

Rural Locums Initiative

The Rural Locums Initiative centralizes and shares information and resources among locums. It also enhances supports to ensure more physicians are comfortably incorporated into the locum pool.  The availability of this pool supports recruitment, retention and resilience in rural British Columbia.

Achievements

Launched a new study

During 2022-23, the initiative started a mid-sized rural communities locum study. The study will explore the access of family physicians in rural communities not covered by Locums for Rural BC to practice coverage, especially with respect to time away for parental leave. The pilot study in Comox and Campbell River is underway, with a province-wide study currently in ethics application.

Found success in networking

A luncheon held during the 2022 Rural Health Conference for people interested in rural locuming attracted 17 participants. Registration for the 2023 event has already opened and sold out.

Facilitated learning partnerships

The Rural Locums initiative provided opportunities to learners to partner with rural locums for educational opportunities. Information was distributed to medical students and residents over the course of the 2022/23 fiscal year.
